Global Developments Affecting Competitiveness Of The Coconut Industry In Malaysia
The contribution of the coconut industry to the Malaysian economy is small and has been declining in importance as an export crop. Nevertheless, Malaysia has seen an increase in the export of end products of coconut such as activated carbon and copra. Although coconut is no longer a major export crop, the concern for the industry stems mainly from socio economic considerations. In view of this, steps are undertaken to rehabilitate and revitalize coconut planting with high yielding varieties. Further research and development efforts would be geared towards increasing productivity, quality improvements and diversification of products.
