This paper outlined a number of initiatives and activities undertaken by FAO on coconut where some 96% of farmers are small holders. FAO has been putting more focus on small holder producers throughout the world. FAO-Rome has an on-going role with COGENT and the CGIAR system to deal with the issues of coconut plant genetic resources and foster research, collection and exchange of planting materials. FAO also plays its role in promoting R&D&E on production systems, management, post harvest, processing, storage and utilization of the crop. FAO/RAP has a wider regional role in the Asia and Pacific region for coconut and other crops. This paper also highlights a summary of projects and activities undertaken in the present in collaboration with other organizations.
