Strategic Efforts Taken In Kiribati To Make Coconut Industry Globally Competitive
Coconut is the mainstay of the inhabitants of Kiribati with copra forming the major export commodity Over the past 10 years coconut production has recorded marked increase. Although Kiribati is free from destructive animal and plant pests and diseases, projects for growth in the agricultural sector are constrained by the harsh natural environment of the country. A new replanting scheme as well as a rehabilitation programme have been introduced with special emphasis on the coconut based economy of small farmers. Production of quality planting material, product diversification and incentives to processors have been assigned adequate importance in the development strategy. The existing research gaps, proposed research activities and future strategy components have been briefly dealt with.
