The paper reviews (considers) shortly the attainments of research in coconut in the fields of genetic improvement, nutrition, diseases and pests and presents the still existing significant gaps. On this basis, the author proposes ways to be explored taking account of the specific character of the plant, opportunities offered by the new tools of biotechnology and development prospects of a global research programme on coconut in which the various stakeholders of development should participate.
