Coconut oil is a distinct vegetable oil that has a special niche in the global arena. Its unique composition makes it an important raw material in oleochemical applications lies in its content of short and medium chain fatty acids of which only coconut and palm kernel oils are the significant source. Many of these non-food applications of coconut oil require the production of the 5 basic oleochemicals: fatty acid, methyl ester, fatty alcohol, fatty amine and glycerine. Further developments in the applications of these basic oleochemicals will be presented.
