Information Networking As A Tool In Technology Transfer

The need for information in developing countries remains crucial. However, the traditional methods for importing it are costly and inefficient, often requiring the employment of foreign experts, purchase of foreign materials and overseas training. In addition to books, journals, documents and other standard formats, there is a need for communication and exchange of ideas between interested individuals and groups. The Internet and new information technologies make it possible to procure much of the knowledge, and conduct many of the needed exchanges across boundaries and time zones at high speeds and low cost. This presentation will outline the exchange in the information paradigm and use the Pan Asia Networking (PAN) experience of IDRC as example of a new tool in technology transfer.
