Issues In Coconut Based Farming Systems

Coconut palm which constituted a component of the subsistence economy for thousands of years was transformed to a monocrop system of cultivation to cater to international trade. However, decline in real gains from primary commodity trade resulting in low returns from monocropping necessitated coconut to return to the original cultivation system. The research so far undertaken satisfies basic agro-technical needs and management information regarding coconut based farming systems. However, in practi ce performance of progranmies especially designed for the promotion of coconut based farming systems leaves much to be desired. This situation has arisen from a range of constraints which are attributed to problems associated with organizational development and management coordination in institutional arrangements provided by different agenci es dealing with coconut based farming systems
