Development Of Innovative Technologies For Early Identification Of Phytoplasma Occurence

Recent progress in molecular biology, electronics and nanotechnology has brought us closer than ever to the diagnostics revolution. The new generation diagnostics use sophisticated technology to produce exceptionally simplified outputs that do not require specialized personnel to interpret the results or perform the analysis.I will describe the “Single Drop Genomics” technology developed in our laboratories that, combined with isothermal amplification and new simplified methods for DNA extraction allows to detect plant and animal pathogens in the field, in 60 minutes or less and without the need for sophisticated scientific equipment. We have successfully applied our technology for the detection of plant pathogens (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense&conglutinans; Pseudomonas syringae; Botrytis cinerea; Cucumber mosaic virus); livestock pathogens (Bovine herpesvirus 1) and human pathogens (Plasmodium falciparum (malaria); HIV proviral DNA; influenza virus H1N1; Mycobacteria Tuberculosis). The new methodology can also be used for the detection of food and water borne pathogens (E. coli; Salmonella, Campylobacter jenuni). I will discuss the plans to adapt the new technology for the detection of Phytoplasmas, in particular the Bogia coconut syndrome threatening plantations in PNG and the wider asia-pacific region.
