Shell Charcoal is obtained by burning the shell of fully matured coconuts with a limited supply of air so that they do not burn away to ash but are only carbonized. The manufacture of shell charcoal shows from the coconut shell has become a very important economic and commercial activity. Furthermore, coconut shell charcoal, which was relatively minor product in the past, has now developed into a general commercial commodity due to its intrinsic value as a raw material for the manufacture of activated carbon. Coconut shell charcoal shall be of the following two types:

Type I – Coconut shell charcoal – pieces
Type II – Coconut shell charcoal - granulated

Scope
This Standard applies for Coconut Shell Charcoal.

Raw Materials
The hard ligneous part of mature coconut (fruit) known as endocarp which lies between the husk and the brown skin (testa) of the kernel.

Definition
The product obtained by charring coconut shells in a limited supply of air.

Classification
Coconut shell charcoal shall be of the following two types.
Type 1 - coconut shell charcoal – pieces
Type 2 - coconut shell charcoal – granulated

Description
Typically, good charcoal is uniformly black in color, non-lustros and broken edges should show a shiny surface with conchoidal fracture. When dropped on a cement or metal surface, good pieces give a clear ring.

Packaging and Marking
Unless otherwise specified, coconut shell charcoal shall be packed in sacks suitable for safe transportation. They shall be of uniform size containing 50 kg of the material. Each container shall carry a tag / label clearly marked with all details.

Organoleptic Properties
The color shall be natural black.

Moisture: <10%
Volatile Matters: 15% Maximum
Ash: <2% Maximum (m/m)
Fixed Carbon: 75% Minimum
Foreign Matter: 0.5% Maximum
Color: Black
